Short on desk space? Build your PC into your desk drawer!

Posted by tfb on January 10, 2012 in Hardware, Real World

Do you keep knocking your desk chair into your PC under your desk? Perhaps you are tired of wrestling with cables and having to take everything apart just for a simple hard drive upgrade.

Then this DIY “PC in a desk” could solve many of your woes. Geek modder, Steve Palmeieri, put together an entire desktop computer in his standard wooden desk, with cables run throughout and the tower in an open drawer. What an awesome winter project!

Home Hack – turn anything into a mount for anything else

Posted by tfb on December 7, 2011 in Hardware, Random thoughts, Real World

In this little Sugru ad, they demonstrate how using Sugru to stick single Lego bricks to various surfaces turns anything into a mount for anything else. It’s really fun, and reminds me of another great Sugru use: sticking a blob of Sugru over a rare-earth magnet and fixing it to a wall or other surface to make a magnetized sticky-point. Available at Amazon.co.uk today

Heating control has evolved…. introducing Nest

Posted by tfb on October 26, 2011 in Hardware, Real World

We’ve always been keen on home automation, but very few products have moved from the professional custom installer market to self install home users. In recent years, with the introduction of Sonos Music systems & others, this shift has begun.

This shift continues with Nest is a new programmable thermostat that has intelligence built-in, the idea was by Tony Fadell, ex-Apple iPod design lead. A clever device that takes less than 20 minutes to install but can control your homes heating using the slick display wheel and/or iPhone app. Designed to minimise energy usage, this device ‘learns’ your daily patterns & can predict when you need (& dont need) heat – clever stuff!
